This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

1993. The Year of Schindler's List and The Age of Innocence. The year of Pacino in Carlito's Way, Slater in True Romance and Murray in Groundhog Day. In my view, 1993 was mainly the year of The House of the Spirits. We were blessed in that year with films that will stay with us forever. Movies that gave us goosebumps, that made us cry and laugh. Movies that made us meet ourselves.

The House of the Spirits is an epic that is unparalleled. Outside of a great performing cast, the time frame and the cinematography, it was mainly the story that stood out. Grand, in every way. A film that overwhelmed you with love and hate, and especially how close those two aspects are. Everything was right about this film. The small details (like in the prologue, the ending and Clara's death) are of an extraterrestrial level. The House of the Spirits is a film that takes you in an emotional grip and doesn't let go. A movie you will never forget.

Incredibly underestimated too. A 6.9 on IMDB and 3.48 on MovieMeter. The praise I give in this message is not out of the blue, a place in my top ten is therefore only right. Highly recommended if you haven't seen this classic yet.

Óh, and Meryl Streep proves once again to be of disproportionate class in this film. Lonely height.

A film well worth watching. The acting performances are quite good, just about every actor managed to give a certain impression to his character. Irons may be the conservative, reprehensible protagonist - he does it flawlessly. I don't think Streep is that special, always gives a somewhat sexy impression, but I haven't seen too much of her yet. Glenn Close is a top actress and it shows again here. The make-up was okay, but it's a bit overdone especially in Irons' face.

The last part of the film came a bit out of the blue for me, but it was perhaps necessary to make the film more memorable. The turnaround of Irons is somewhat drastic given his past. But ultimately the message of the film is, among other things, that family is very important and that it should always come first in the end. Trueba (Irons) takes some time to realize that, but wisdom comes with age (they say).

This long film has been here for a while and now I have watched it again. No expectations, but was pleasantly surprised nonetheless. A beautiful drama that captivated you from start to finish. The extensive and well-known cast also did a great job.

Worth watching!
