“I'm gonna turn around with a great smile, and walk my white ass back across 8 Mile.”

This remains a surprisingly strong film. 8 Mile is yet another story about a boy from the slum who wants to make something of his life (through music), but the film executes that very strongly. A raw atmosphere, solid story and strong Eminem make for an impressive film. The highlight of course is the rap battles at the end. Beautifully done. Murphy is also good and the rest of the cast is adequate. Great film debut from Eminem.

As a high school student from a family where they only listened to classical music, Eminem was my first introduction to hip-hop. I have to admit that the attraction was mainly in the video clips, which I found very funny. "My Name Is" in particular was a hit. Still not really a hip-hop fan, although I can appreciate some albums from The Wu-Tang Clan, Big L, Big Punisher and The Notorious BIG. And those Eminem albums that were popular in those days, The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Matters LP are still nice to listen to too.

In any case, at some point it became clear to me that there was more behind the foul-mouthed type Slim Shady, who ridiculed everything that was going on in the world at the time, and the reputation of the city of Detroit has also become clear to me. I spent one night in a Detroit motel myself after being stranded at the airport, which is, of course, unprecedented luxury compared to the trailers in the movie, but I still found the part of the city that I saw on the way to that motel also gray .

Gray and raw, that's what this film is. The environment is desolate, as is the situation of the main character. Played with gusto by Eminem, though he plays himself. Because despite the fact that this film is only loosely based on his life, it is clear. But hey, where one gets it from isn't important in the end. Nothing to complain about the other actors either, everyone came across as completely natural.

Because of the naturalness of the acting, but also because of the gray decor of the city, the film comes across as a genuine atmospheric document of the hip-hop scene in a desolate city. Camera work is registering and far from artistic. Normally I would complain about the latter, but given the overall atmosphere, artistry in the images would probably have been inappropriate. In any case, the drama is enough to keep the attention. 3*.
