Sister Act plot
"No booze! No sex! No drugs!... No way!"
Delores (Goldberg), a singer at a Reno club, witnesses an employee's murder by her boyfriend who turns out to be a gangster leader. The police don't want to lose Delores, so they put her in an old monastery for protection. She soon makes friends with the sisters. After sneaking out with two friends to go to a bar, she is put in the choir by the head nurse. The next mass, everyone is surprised by a swinging group of sisters. Thanks to her good work, Delores is in the newspaper. But now the gangsters know of course that she is in the monastery, where her old gangster friend pays a visit...

Nice comedy, although I had higher expectations for this well-known title. The story is simple and straight forward. It is also a film that feels a bit outdated by now, comic nuns may be an out-of-date in the film world these days. Nice to have seen once, especially because of the musical intermezzos. 2.5*

This is very light entertainment, but well made. You can't imagine anyone but Whoopi in that lead role. Some jokes are lame, but others are well thought out. The build-up is good, with crime comedy in the first and third act and the middle part in the safe monastery. The fast tempo, the chase scenes, the enthusiasm of the nuns and of course the swinging 60s soul ensure that it never collapses anywhere. Harvey Keitel and Maggie Smith both play a hard character with a soft underside.

A film that brings what it seems. A light-hearted happy family film with the necessary humor and fun songs. I can't count how many shows in local associations I've seen where they performed a song from Sister Act. The songs are pretty good and the story is nicely told. It's not high-end cinema, but the film does what it's supposed to do. And it still hangs. Nice nostalgia.
