Terrible nonsense.

I don't think I ever saw much He-Man before, although I can't remember it clearly anymore. These kinds of cartoons were not for me anyway, so the chance is small. In any case, after watching this movie I didn't complain, although the general tenor does seem to be that the animation was better.

That's not too difficult, because this film has become an unreal kitschy affair. Here and there it reminds a bit of a lost Star Wars, but it is mainly a cheaper Conan that they have moved to Earth in terms of setting, probably to save some more budget.

Characters are insufferable, the plot is three times nothing and the effects are very cheap. Klapper, however, is Dolph Lundgren, who plays such an unreal bad role that you hardly think it possible. It's like a parody of its own evil self.

Perhaps some youthful sentiment or a dazzling love for 80s kitsch can still anoint something here, but without those things it is serious torture.

1.0*

Masters of the Universe the film from 1987 should not be taken too seriously, especially in line with the franchise. It is a very funny film in which the funny mainly emerges from all the clumsy that is observable. A real MOTU fan won't be able to do much with this, haha.

Seen in the cinema as a boy of about 10 years old at the time, thought it was quite cool, but yes, a child's hand was quickly filled. I especially liked the floating vehicles. I never collected He-Man figures and I had rarely watched the cartoon series back then. This probably made me less annoyed by all the characters that were missing plus the characters that were made up for this film (Gwildor, black stormtroopers).

Best is Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn. Langella is creditable as Skeletor, especially in voice, but still radiates too little, maybe they should have done more with the eyes, sometimes the mask + makeup just doesn't work well and he comes across as stupid or surprised instead of threatening. Lundgren always gets the most criticism but it was a very logical choice and should have been directed a little better here and there. You see a scene in which he can't contain his laughter, yes that should have been a retake. Robert Duncan McNeill has always been a bit annoying to me, even as Tom Paris in Voyager. Courtney Cox is always a sweetheart, but it's a shame that the film pays too much attention to the two teenagers at the expense of He-Man. The choice to have a large part played on Earth is also questionable and clearly budgetary in nature. In the end we see very little of Castle Greyskull or Eternia.

The soundtrack is very Superman-esque, fitting in itself. Special effects very decent but the film could have been seen a lot better with a better budget. Although the story wasn't really anything to write home about, especially at the end where there is also a sin with time travel.
