Very bad. The film has a few entertaining moments and the make-up effects are just passable, but otherwise the film is just too bad and boring for words in all areas. I don't know the other parts (I just saw that there are already four films), but I won't even start there.

The sequel is in many ways better, more qualitative and more daring than its predecessor, but nevertheless it still makes a poor impression. Director Ted Nicolaou creates an effective atmosphere during the first 20 minutes and has the Romanian urban landscapes to thank for this. Bloody images are also introduced, which were sorely missed in the first part. However, the acting takes a downgrade, with poor performances from Denice Duff and Melanie Shatner. The dramatic elements certainly fall by the wayside and the middle section is quite a tough one, but Nicolaou increases the pace towards the finale and benefits from atmospheric sets. Overall this makes it easier to sit through and hopefully the upgrades will continue.

The second installment of the Subspecies franchise is significantly worse than the first. In the first installment, Michelle was the sympathetic heroine who fought the vampire Radu. In this film, she has become a vampire herself, and nothing remains of her bold demeanor. All she does in the second installment is run away and cry. After every sunset, she awakens in her elegant coffin and reacts hysterically because she awakens in an elegant coffin. Michelle is no longer a significant character. In Subspecies II, only one person has a leading role, and that is Anders Hove as the vampire Radu.

There's still some hope for sympathy when Melanie Shatner (daughter of William Shatner) shows up. Although she delivers the best performance, her character is utterly uninteresting. She's not a worthy counterpart to Anders Hove. So it's all about Radu. And Radu has a lot to do in this film. He meets his mother, who is played excellently and utterly creepily by Pamela Gordon. Unfortunately, the private conversations with son Radu are of a lousy and laughable level, so that the creepiness of his mother is somewhat lost. Incidentally, Radu looks very sinister once again. He delivers another wonderfully trashy version of Count Orlok.

The film doesn't boast a ton of special effects, and despite its focus on vampires, barely a drop of blood is shed. Only Radu and his mother score on the horror meter. The film's horror label is otherwise irrelevant. Subspecies II is a relatively harmless film when it comes to horror. It is, however, atmospheric. Like Part I, the film was shot in Romania. The beautiful old castle ruins and Bucharest's old town, along with several scenes where shadows are effectively used, provide an atmospheric backdrop to the story. And so, Subspecies II is definitely worth watching.
