In the old days, when dragons were alive, it was always wise to keep them as friends. And just like with a man, love also goes through the stomach with a dragon. A king regularly holds a drawing of lots among all the virgins in his realm. The virgin who is drawn will be served to the dragon to keep him out of the kingdom. It's up to a magician and his sidekick to kill the dragon.

Fantasy movies were a popular theme in the 1980s. This was mainly due to the success of films such as Star Wars and the improved visual techniques that were available in the 1980s. Dragonslayer is one of the better fantasy films from the 80s.

The tricks were groundbreaking for the time and for the first time real use was made of “Go-Motion”, an improved variant of “Stop-Motion” in which a moving object is filmed and then with the help of the computer in a certain scene is mounted. The dragon from Dragonslayer was created in such a way and it must be said that it still looks impressive after more than 30 years. In addition to the beautiful tricks, the music of Alex North is also extremely beautiful.

The film contains a nice story, but protagonist Peter MacNicol is a disappointment and he is quite out of place with his American accent. Fortunately, we still have Ralph Richardson, who played one of his last film roles here, before he died of a stroke in 1983.

Shot on location in Wales.

Hmmmm....I don't think this film has stood the test of time. The story was wafer-thin and apart from the special effects, the acting performances were also not up to par. At times I felt more like I was watching a play. Too bad, because I was looking forward to this movie =)

2*

Nice adventure film with excellent effects for that time, the dragon comes into the picture more and more in the story. The cast including Peter MacNicol is also doing very well, very nice to see again after many many years.
