A Cinderella Story plot
"Once upon a time... can happen any time."
Sam Montgomery (Hilary Duff) lives with her stepmother and stepsisters after her father dies. She dreams of studying at Princeton, the place to hook up with a prince. But she may have already met her Prince Charming: her anonymous chat boyfriend (Chad Michael Murray), whom she's agreed to meet at a Halloween party. However, Sam panics when the secretive man turns out to be the coolest guy in the whole school. Can he love a girl who isn't that popular? Can fairy tales become reality? Only if Sam stands her ground and she gives her dreams a firm hand.

A typical Chick flick starring Hilary Duff.
The actress/singer didn't hesitate for a moment when she was approached for this film, because "Cinderella" was her favorite fairy tale during her childhood. Her co-star Rupert Grint had to pass up the role of Austin. At the time, he was busy shooting for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). He was replaced by Chad Michael Murray. Together with co-star Kevin Kilner, this was their 2nd collaboration after the TV series "One Tree Hill. " The actor also appeared together with actress Julie Gonzalo in Freaky Friday (2003). For Regina King and Jennifer Coolidge, this film marked their 3rd collaboration after Down to Earth (2001) and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003).
Jennifer Coolidge is of course known as the MILF (Stifler's mom) from American Pie (1999), but in this film plays the evil stepmother who doesn't have problems with botox. However, she is allergic to glue. Thus, her long fingernails were secured with tape.
Production designer Charles William Breen has really enjoyed himself. For example, he was responsible for Sam's attic room. These were built on the set of Warner Bros. The results are impressive. This also applies to the film that remains enjoyable despite the standard clichés.

Hilary Duff is a fun actress and she ensures that this Cinderella story remains entertaining to watch. A modern Cinderella story with social media and chat, but of course also with the well-known slipper moment (here a mobile phone). Crazy stepparents (with Jennifer Coolidge of course), psychopathic parents who want to push their child in a certain direction and some romance with a Duff and Murray who certainly don't get it wrong. A Cinderella Story is not a high flyer, but certainly not wrong as a snack.

In fact, all the movies Hollywood makes for teenage girls follow the trajectory of fairy tales and in this Comedy/Romance movie the fairy tale of "Cinderella" is moved to an American high school.
In this story, Sam (Hilary Duff) is used as a booty by her bitchy stepmother Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge) and two stepsisters. She has a sweet anonymous internet boyfriend, Austin (Chad Michael Murray), but it's a bit of a shock when the boyfriend turns out to be the hunk of the school.
It is certainly not an easy task to save such an uninspired girl film as this one from destruction. As mentioned before, the story is a refreshed version of "Cinderella", but as far as modern update is concerned, it doesn't get any further than the internet and a mobile phone here and there. Only lead actress Hilary Duff (who is of course also nice to watch) knows how to give some life to the constructed world despite her good lyrics.
