Mwa.

Baby Blood is a movie I watched because I had no choice. I was in company and this was the movie that was chosen. I had never even heard of it and the concept didn't really appeal to me. Still, the movie managed to grab me so that it wasn't completely worthless, otherwise I didn't think it was that good.

A film that fortunately still chooses the practical path a bit, but then leaves the impressive parts off-screen. Robak chooses an approach where blood is sprayed off-screen on a character's face, but the open wounds are cleverly kept off-screen. This gives the film a cheap feel right away that doesn't really work.

The progression is still nice, but the bad acting of Escourrou ensures that the conversations between her and the demon are not convincing. The dialogues are also of a very strange level, really seriously below par. What the film manages to save a little is the adventurous feeling that still manages to lead the viewer smoothly through the running time.

For a film of this caliber it is still passable, but I can't do much with it. Concept is now quite outdated, but in the areas where it could do well it does little. With this film Robak chooses too easy a path, so there is not really anything that makes a good impression. Too bad.

Very nice French cult horror.

And also "normally" watchable on Netflix. I had expected a kind of raw, rancid horror film at first, but that is not so bad at first. Yanka is a young circus artist who is under the thumb of her aggressive husband. One day something strange happens on the circus grounds; a panther is completely blown to pieces and everyone is puzzled. It soon turns out to be the work of a parasite, which has found its way out in Yanka. Not much later, after some stomach cramps and strange symptoms, Yanka decides to flee to Paris and something very strange appears to be going on. She can talk to her unborn child.

And this unborn child wants to be fed with blood, and yes, then a Baby Blood becomes a kind of serial killer on the road. Yanka meets the most absurd and typical men (and women) and the killing goes easier than expected. The murders look so wrong and over the top; almost as if it gradually seems to become more and more normal. And the blood splatters around your ears.

Hilarious highlights: That blood bank bus, and especially that ambulance scene.. The result itself also keeps it nicely mysterious. What exactly did that child become?

No, I really enjoyed this wonderfully bad picture that fortunately puts more emphasis on humor and irony. A bit in the vein of La Meute, La Horde and Goal of the Dead... Proof that in 1990 there was still something beautiful to experience in France in terms of horror. The actress was a beautiful young lady and acted well.

I enjoyed it... and laughed.

4.0* (but leaning towards a 4.5*)

Baby Blood encompasses pretty much everything those 80s horror movies try to be. Traditional ingredients such as strange creatures, gore and nudity are present. Maybe not throughout the entire film, but the combination of all this makes up for a lot. Emmanuelle Escourrou may not have been the brightest light in the acting world and her oeuvre has therefore remained limited. Still, she leaves an impression. You could not miss her gaping front teeth, just like her voluptuous body and bosom. Where this was still hidden in the circus at the beginning of the film, she goes completely crazy in that dilapidated building.

In the film she gives birth to a strange creature that speaks to her in the belly to feed him with blood. You immediately get the Alien gadgets for free: a chestburster and facehugger! The beginning of the gory part of the film. You had to wait for it. The ride in the ambulance then becomes unforgettable.

Unfortunately, it ends rather abruptly. There could have been a lot more fun in that. Maybe the budget ran out? It was fun and entertaining, but it's not a high flyer, at least not in terms of name recognition.
