"The magic of the tropics ! Adventure ... mystery ... romance !"
A freighter with a cargo of champagne is moored in Sydney Harbor. Many of the crew, including Captain Wishart, have died from the contagious smallpox. Former Captain Donald Lochlin and his mates Robert Herrick and Huish take command of the ship to sell the cargo elsewhere. After leaving, the trio determines that the deceased captain's daughter, Faith Wishart, has survived smallpox. This proves to complicate their mission, as does a fire on board. The ship strands at Tahua, a remote island ruled by the ruthless and religious British fanatic Attwater, who has proclaimed himself a god. This does not bode well for the castaways.
