Virginia Cary's (Shirley Temple) father is a rebel officer who becomes homesick during the war and flees to his hometown to visit his family. He is later arrested there. A Yankee feels sorry for him and devises an escape plan. This goes wrong, everyone is arrested and the officers involved are sentenced to death.
