MOPI is a somewhat unusual film about a tormented male prostitute played by River Phoenix. Keanu Reeves plays his partner in crime. Memorable scenes: a falling wooden hut as a metaphor for orgasm, Little Dutch Boy polishes with Dutch cleaner, the sensitive revelation at the campfire and still shots of both sex scenes. The moving and talking male models on the covers of gay magazines are amazing! Cinematography with beautiful images of countryside in Idaho and Italy. Very tangible contrast between rich and poor at the end of the film. It is hard to comprehend that just two years after this River, too early and far too young, traded the temporary for the eternal.......

Based on whatever, the movie didn't hit me at any point.

The American national anthem is played every now and then. Cynical ? From which I could conclude that the filmmaker considers US policy partly to blame for the unenviable conditions portrayed in the film.

Recently watched several films with Phoenix, I already knew quite a few titles from Reeves. This movie is often high on the top charts for River Phoenix movies, but also gets quite a bit of criticism online. I certainly didn't think this was the strongest film with Phoenix, but I think you just have to like this type of film.

I really liked the scene at the campfire. The second half of the film wasn't too bad either, when a kind of steady story finally got going (except for the denouement). I did feel like I understood the movie, but it's just not quite my thing. In addition, beautiful shots, but everything else feels quite dated in terms of setup. And that's not bad at all: we are now 30 years further.
