Mediocre.

This is really the Robin Williams show. Basically everything revolves around his character, the war is just a little background. The problem is that William's character isn't too captivating either, only his interpretation makes it a bit special.

It's all pretty funny in the beginning. William's is irritating but that's supposed to be his character. Furthermore, a rather cool depiction of the army and the war, but that is also part of it. The radio shows are clearly the main focus of this movie and they are entertaining.

But after halfway it becomes a bit more serious and sentimental, and the repetition of the joke also starts to sting. The last half hour is just a soggy Hollywood disaster. Too bad because Levinson normally makes nicer movies.

1.5*

This is childhood nostalgia with a beautiful Robin Williams in particular. This is where the nostalgia comes into play for me. So time to look back. Barry Levinson is a real Hollywood director with mostly good films that are not exactly creative. His films mainly rely on the actors who play in them. Think Rain Man or Sleepers. Here too it mainly revolves around Robin Williams. The interaction with the rest is not that bad, but the big trump card is especially Williams who makes radio. Also, it doesn't run very smoothly. That love story is sometimes even a bit wrong and the war is sometimes no more than some background music.

It is a family film that will probably appeal to few people today, but rather continues to reverberate in the memory of a previous generation.

Not my thing.

I am a bit surprised at the status it has acquired over the years. Not that the numbers it gets are that significantly high, but still you can't say that this film has fallen into oblivion. Perhaps because it is a typical Williams film, but this time during the Vietnam War. That does provide an original setting.

Unfortunately, I wasn't much of a Williams fan. As an actor, he's strong, he's certainly played brilliant roles, but I don't really like him much in this kind of busy and energetic character. His radio scenes are very exhausting, in fact childish. Perhaps this was the norm for that time to distract many a person from the war, but seeing it that way I can do little with it except struggle through it.

Furthermore, some impressive images of war, but the fairly childish approach of the rest of the story ensures that the film feels more like a kind of propaganda film about how much fun the war really is. Of course the film contradicts that, but all that cheerful nonsense feels out of place, and in my opinion the film does too little to really exhale that anti-war feeling.

It's a pretty nice production if it's your thing, but the comedy isn't my thing and the rather unbalanced tone doesn't bother me much either. Still points for the nice acting, some impressive scenes of the war and an authentic environment. These kinds of movies are not my thing and never will be. I guess I was just born in the wrong era for that.
