I've lived in a dream. I'm afraid to wake up.

The story—based on a book by Isabel Allende—is set in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship, and with that, it is quite clear where it is heading. Or perhaps the summary by Jennifer Connelly will do the trick: he has a greasy notebook with everything in it.

On the other hand, the story is one for all time. And a warning for the future, because more than ever we see people again who fancy themselves of a superior kind, who believe they have more rights than others, that 'hard work' grants more rights or liberates them, and who simply want to get rid of those others—no matter where. You would think we know how that ends, but no.

As a film, it is a hodgepodge of good intentions, visual embellishment, and tinkering on the margins. Good intentions aplenty regarding the subject matter, visual embellishment whenever Connelly is on screen, and tinkering when it involves Banderas—in few films is it so clear that he can only play two types: my grandfather and the hero from Desperado, and nothing in between.

But that is clearly not the point. It is the question that remains unanswered with Good night, Chile – when we will all finally realize that things have to change. While fascism is celebrating new successes across Europe, America and Russia have already fallen prey, and we all know very well why – a superlative of the horrors of the last time they held power.

I've lived in a dream. I'm afraid to wake up.
