My daughters were 3 and 4 years old when the movie came out. I don't remember how I got the film back then, but I think it was an illegal band. Every morning as soon as they woke up, I had to put this movie on. They thought it was so beautiful, so you can bet that I've seen this film many times. It has never bored me because it is and remains a wonderful puppet film to watch. Hence a big 5

I feel a little bad about only handing out 1.5 stars here, because a lot of what annoyed me about the film I could have known beforehand. And is not so much purely negative, but something where there was quite a mismatch between what The Dark Crystal offered, and what I was waiting for. But I really couldn't do much with this. It's quite fun at times, but that's where the fun ends: for the most part I thought this was a very annoying children's film with annoying characters and a fantasy world that was so toddlerish and bland that I couldn't go along with it for a moment. Well, maybe you shouldn't watch kids' movies then, you might say - but there are plenty of other kid-oriented movies that I could enjoy just fine (many Ghibli's, Disneys, Toy Story, and also 80s fantasy like The Neverending Story), but there are still ingredients that make it fun even if you are not eight years old. And that's where it goes wrong with The Dark Crystal - simple good-and-evil story, an annoying main character, and a successful joke couldn't really get rid of it either. Then just a sourdough.

Hopelessly dated as my predecessor claims, I certainly do not find it. Totally disagree. Thanks to the Bluray edition that makes you almost forget how old this film is. Ok, the story is dime a dozen that immediately makes you think of dozens of other fantasy "quests" (Krull, Legend, LOTR, etc) but the nicely worked out sets and use of puppets make this film radiate a lot of realism in in contrast to the fakeness of many congeners from that period. Especially the part where Jen walks through a forest teeming with life is impressively performed. I follow the conclusion of Left4Dead : simple story but nicely executed.
