Despite the well-known cast, including a number of beautiful women such as Elisabeth Shue, Gina Gershon and Chloë Sevigny, this is nothing more than a meaningless, bland dime-a-dozen Thriller / Crime film that hardly manages to fascinate.

The fairly predictable story moves slowly and is also quite boring (especially the first hour). Relatively little also happens (just one murder, where the story turns around) and there are no fun or surprising twists in the story. The most exciting moment was perhaps the scene with the policeman, who offers help with changing a car tire (while there is a corpse in the trunk). Because of the many well-known female beauties, the film is enjoyable and leading actor Woody Harrelson (in the role of Harry Barber) did a creditable job. The ending of the story was still nice and even a bit rude.

But all in all, this is just a mediocre thriller, which I accidentally saw on the HBO television channel.

I think Palmetto belongs to the neo noir genre. It is depicted quite colorfully, but other films also have that. There is a femme fatale in the game, being Elisabeth Shue. This could just as easily have been played by Gina Gershon (who starred in a top film in this genre a few years earlier, Bound). Furthermore, there is the typical brooding atmosphere (you often see Woody wiping his head from sweat), the Venetian blinds as well, not to mention the plot twists. It is certainly not the best in the genre, but I think that is why it is becoming a bit of a forgotten film. Yet it is certainly not a bad film.
