The Way of All Flesh plot

Augustus Schiller is a contented husband and father of six who works as a cashier for the Germania Bank. He is sent to Chicago with some securities from the bank. During the train ride, he is seduced by Mayme, a petty con man. He has a wild night with her. When he wakes up in a shabby hotel, he realizes that she ran off with the effects. While looking for her, he is attacked by a pickpocket who steals his valuables from him. A struggle ensues in which the pickpocket falls in front of the train and dies. A few days later, Schiller reads a report in the newspaper that the business roller is being mistaken for Schiller. In other words; officially it no longer exists. In order not to disgrace his family, he lives on incognito.
