The girl Sarah suffers from her disability, puts on all kinds of moral obligations, isolates herself in her silent world and eventually becomes very introverted. A relationship with her is full of obstacles.

The interpretation of this difficult role - it must remain believable - is convincingly observed by debutante Marlee Matlin, who does so with great conviction in this film, who unfortunately finds it a handicap in repeating what was expressed with characters orally.

I also blame the film for some sentimentality and a cliché is not being looked at now.

He didn't really hit me at all.

Good film about a new teacher at a school for the deaf who falls in love with a deaf employee. A great love drama in which communication is not the only barrier. A fairly captivating main character and the fact that it is filled in by an actual deaf person adds to the authenticity. Two beautiful roles by William Hurt and a debuting Marlee Matlin (their scenes together are also the best of the film).

Somewhat comparable to the better The Miracle Worker and [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/101315]Marie Heurtin[ /url].

Too easy.

Just like (very) many other drama films that tackle a large-scale subject, it is a very predictable film. It's still amazing how nonsensical horror movies come up with the original ideas these days, and this movie shows that it wasn't much different in the 80s. An easy and somewhat simplistic film is my message.

It does have some plus points, which I'll just mention. For example, there is the necessary chemistry between Hurt and Matlin. Two actors who can gain some ground, especially in the scenes that they are next to each other. Apart from each other they are somewhat weaker figures, but that does not mean that they have a number of moments together that will stay with you. Always affordable, especially since these kinds of films really need it.

Unfortunately, the film doesn't have much more interesting to say. It does look nice, but is not much more than the umpteenth variant that turns an interesting fact into an easy romantic concoction. I especially notice little challenge as adventure, which makes it very easy to forget. So that also applies to me. I'm obviously not going to give a film that I don't know anything about after two weeks.
