I think I'm a lesser with Gabin. Without subtitles, it was quite a task to understand the dialogues (with sometimes quite a few dialect words). Henri "Le Nantais" is a criminal with experience in the drug world and is taken in hand by a drug lord to bring order to his organization. Regularly "marchandise" disappears through the dealers. Henri has to make sure that the 'staff' is back in line with a heavy hand. He gets a restaurant as a cover. Quite slow in the first half where you learn how the drug ring works, then it gets a bit more intense when the police start to apply pressure. The ending holds another surprise. But as I said, not my favorite movie with Gabin..

A policeman with some absolute icons of French cinema. I like to let that happen to me. This film was even innovative for its time in its attempt to portray the drug scene in a realistic way. I myself got the feeling that the semi-documentary character transcends the plot at times. But even then we see classy Jean Gabin busy like a fish in troubled water.

Furthermore, very beautifully portrayed by Henri Decoin and his team. Beautiful photography, location shots in Paris and chiaroscuro lighting as in the best noirs.
