Mind Ripper (or The Outpost, as it is sometimes called) comes from the time when the name Wes Craven was splashed across the poster, even though the best man had little or nothing to do with it. Such as Dracula 2000, They or the remake of Carnival of Souls. For Mind Ripper, the link with Wes Craven is not that far-fetched; his son Jonathan wrote the script. The film was originally going to be The Hills Have Eyes Part 3, but that was changed during the process. In some places the film is still promoted as The Hills Have Eyes 3, even though the only similarity between those two films and Mind Ripper is the desert setting.

Mind Ripper is a fairly stupid film about scientists who are attacked in a bunker by their own creation. This is a (initially long-haired) screaming bodybuilder, who can scream non-stop like a Nazgul on a Velociraptor. It's admirable that his eyes didn't pop out or his jaw dislocate during filming. He kills his victims with his deadly tongue. His victims are initially somewhat interchangeable scientists, until Lance Hendriksen and his family - including Giovanni Ribisi in his first film role - come to visit. The acting is quite terrible, especially Hendriksen's daughter and his friend are like nails on a chalkboard. Fortunately, the pace is quite good, we get enough action from the crazy screaming lunatic. In fact, he really doesn't know how to stop.

Lance Hendriksen says he is ashamed of this work and that means something for an actor who shows up for a few tens of euros in a school production of De Vierspring primary school in Klazienaveen. But Mr. Hendriksen should not act like that; of the many bad productions he has been in, Mind Ripper is far from the worst.

2.5 stars.

Originally intended as a third film for The Hills Have Eyes which son Jonathan Craven happily co-wrote, but ultimately linked separately from the series in question. Father Wes Craven himself was only responsible for the production, but with this lousy screenplay, even Quentin Tarantino cannot save the film as producer. The build-up is far too slow, the acting completely lifeless and the ideas too cheesy to connect everything together. It is already completely silly that you manage to write a family to such a dangerous environment, but from that point on it all just becomes more trivial. Moreover, the layout did not look good, the threat ultimately took the form of a kind of human Megamind. It's nice that the pace is high and the choice of location is quite successful, but a whole like The Outpost is completely devoid of atmosphere or tension. A completely saltless film and a miserable experience to get through.
