"Welcome to the Kaufman surreal-neorealism tale in a dull world of sameness."

Michael Stone is a customer-friendliness guru, but ironically, in his own life, he doesn't know how to make contact with the people around him. The social isolation in which Michael finds himself is becoming more and more noticeable. Then he meets the mousey Lisa. He doesn't know why, but she fascinates him immensely.

Strong movie. It's good that there are still film makers who can and want to be original and who think about how or why they make something. As far as I'm concerned, Kaufman once seriously overturned himself once (Synecdoche, New York), but with this animated film he is back on track with earlier masterpieces. Actually also his most accessible film to date, this apparently simple story, where, however, something is bubbling under the surface. I was initially surprised by the terrible quality of the animation, but even that had a function, so you think afterwards. Gradually it didn't bother me anymore, because you were so caught up in the story and its meaning that you hardly realize that you were not looking at real people but at poor animation. However, I only had that feeling during the last twenty minutes, so you can also conclude that this chosen form also has a disadvantage: the emotionally rich story with multiple layers, never really gets under the skin, perhaps because of that specific animation form. You look at it with respect and appreciation, but unfortunately it has not become an undisputed masterpiece, the possibilities have not been fully utilized.

Also special to use breed actors like Leigh and Thewlis here purely as voice actors. But they both do an excellent job, have added value, make their characters palpable.

A typical film that eventually gets better if you see it several times, I think. Anomalisa stimulates and challenges, one of those things that you can still discuss in the old-fashioned way afterwards.

Definitely worth it.

Kaufman takes center stage, but don't ignore the great work of Duke Johnson, who shows with his animation that he can make a mature and fully-fledged animation film. There is a lot of feeling and emotion in the characters, without the usual broad gestures. Don't think I've seen it in this form before.

Another fascinating story, which makes me look forward to the next 10 years with a bit of anxiety. The midlife crisis that Stone is in is clearly not a very rosy situation, it's better for it to be honest. But very cleverly and effectively rendered, although that also means that the film is not really full of action or "typical" events that normally keep the momentum going.

Film looks great, Thewlis is really an added value (great dub without Thewlis itself dominating his character) and a number of scenes that are very memorable (the basement + the sex scene), but do not define the film.

4.0* and a extended review
