"From the creator of Being John Malkovich, comes the story about the creator of Being John Malkovich."

The film tells the story of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman who attempts to adapt the Susan Orleans non-fiction book The Orchid Thief. The book is the story of John Laroche, a plant dealer who clones rare orchids and sells them to collectors. We see the events from the book as we see Kaufman's attempts to transfer the book to film.

Not a comedy at all. Too bad because I was just in the mood for a comedy. Had my doubts about how a plot like this could be comical. Now I know the answer. Not.

Not a simple film in which the deeper layer is present, but therefore does not always penetrate. If you look at it in retrospect, it is well put together, playing with reality and fantasy and a combination of these. With a character that also exists in reality (Charlie Kaufman) and then starts behind the scenes of 'Being John Malkovich". All very bizarre ... or ingenious, who knows?

It gets interesting when Charlie's alter ego and brother shows up and is actually the complete opposite of what he is and thinks. Charlie is insecure, both at work and in love. He has been struggling for a while to write a decent script about a book with orchids.

Only to end up with something he didn't want at all in a pure Hollywood style. Great movie, not 100% all clear to me, but still enjoyed it, especially the excellent Nicolas Cage. Hopefully he picked up the thread after Pig!

Jonze.

From a time when he managed to put down seriously good concepts, only unlike Being John Malkovich a lot less appealing. Probably because Adaptation makes less use of science fiction elements and actually brings out an intelligent but more regular story.

Cage can play the lead role in a film that is probably considered by many to be one of his best films. I just think that most of the competition he knows from himself is mainly within the present time. He used to be less careful with his roles, but that makes this film look positive. His acting is decent, although it still remains a bit uncertain.

The other characters are less interesting, but they are there, what I personally encountered was the limited quality on an audiovisual level. Sometimes some interesting editing, otherwise a film that mainly has an inhibiting effect. On the one hand, it fits with the concept, but knowing that Jonze has quite a bit of creativity in directing, this film comes across as disappointing.

Story is strong, but it is the lack of presentation that does not really show it off. Solid acting, several surprises and a well-running line, but not a film that has a really absorbing effect. There is no real invitation to empathy or any other emotion for a moment, and that is a crucial element that I think is missing.
