Delightful, but typical, French adventure film.

Based on the 1910s serial by Louis Feuillade. I haven't seen the original, but the film apparently follows the plot pretty closely.

The film looks beautiful, mainly due to the beautiful slow camera work, but also because of the beautiful sets and costumes.

As an actor, Channing Pollock is decent, but the eye-catcher is Francine Bergé, who plays a wonderful villain.

A very good film and will soon watch the second film in the set (Nuits Rouges)!

4*

With this remake, Franju paid homage to Louis Feuillade. After Fantômas, this director had been criticized for presenting a criminal as a hero. That is why he came up with Judex, a similar hero who fights injustice, although he does so by taking the law into his own hands, which makes him ethically ambiguous.

Even more ambiguous is Diana, alias the governess Maria, who disguises herself as a nun or in a tight burglar's outfit in pursuit of big money. This thief is the character that I find most sympathetic. Madame Jacqueline Aubry, widow and banker's daughter, is too much of a saint for this. The detective and the little boy who goes along on the quest are also fun.

White and black symbolize good and evil. Think of the dove of peace and the clothes of Jacqueline and acrobat Daisy. The latter is adeus ex machina, an artificial plot device.

Judex was a precursor to pulp heroes like The Shadow and Batman. He used modern technology, bordering on science fiction. How he causes the apparent death of banker Favraux without him even having to drink remains a mystery. Disguised as secretary Vallières he is unrecognizable. Diana was a precursor to Catwoman. In the early twentieth century, exciting adventures with disguises and double identities were popular. Such stories should be judged on their entertainment, not on their credibility.
