"...and suddenly the screams of a baby born in Hell!"
The excommunicated priest Michael establishes a satanic sect that looks Catholic on the outside. Michael convinces Henry Beddows to possess his daughter Catherine's soul so that she can become the devil's representative on Earth on her eighteenth birthday. But as that day approaches, Henry seeks help from American occult writer John Verney in hopes of saving Catherine both physically and spiritually.

A decent film about a writer of occult books who becomes embroiled in the plan of a satanic priest. It is clear that this film piggybacks on the success of similar, popular films from that era. However, the story of this film is mysterious enough and is presented in a reasonably entertaining way. Furthermore, there are a few quite gruesome scenes and a truly remarkable debut by the young Nastassja Kinski.

The film struggles to find a balance between Hammer's familiar style and the new style that horror had embraced in the mid-70s. This creates a distinct atmosphere, but it falls somewhat short. Fortunately, we can count on Christopher Lee. And a young Nastassja Kinski, who, despite her fourteen years, goes completely naked in this film...
Also appearing are Goldfinger Bond girl Honor Blackman and Denholm Elliott, known as Marcus Brody in several Indiana Jones films. The famous names cannot really save the film, and it remains a somewhat aimless horror that comes across as rather forced and, by now, dated. It is not bad, but unfortunately, it never becomes good either.

A Hammer film that doesn't exactly have a Hammer atmosphere but is nonetheless quite entertaining and at times even reasonably suspenseful; okay, it never reaches the level of The Omen, but it is certainly not bad.
In his somewhat older days, Widmark plays the good guy again this time, and Christopher Lee, as always, plays the bad guy with gusto.
