mrs. O'Leary raises her three sons alone after her husband's death. Dion becomes a handsome and unruly political connoisseur, Jack becomes a lawyer on a mission, and Bob has no other ambition in life than to marry his lover and have children. There is a lot of political intrigue involving Dion, Jack and the corrupt Major Donlevy. All this, however, is only a start to the real theme of the film, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which is introduced by the O'Leary family.

A highly exaggerated drama about the rise and fall of an influential family in 19th-century Chicago. I didn't really care for the old-fashioned and rather over-the-top family affairs and political intrigue (not to mention the numerous musical interludes featuring song and dance), but the film's climax is worth seeing. It impressively and spectacularly depicts the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
