Das Blaue Licht plot

Junta is a young woman who is, however, very unpopular with the other women of the village. They even accuse Junta of being a witch because she is the only one who manages to climb the mountain near the village on which the mysterious Blue Light shines.

Leni Riefenstahl wanted to make films, and preferably with herself in the lead role. She saw herself as a celebrated actress, which of course she was not. Her strength, or perhaps better, her genius, lay elsewhere, and that is already evident in this film. In this film, she plays a spirited village girl named Junta, searching for the blue light in the mountains, which is feared by the taciturn villagers. It shines only at full moon. Junta clambers up and down the mountain and is regarded as a witch by the villagers.

But of course, this is not about the story. That is merely a side issue. It is about the overwhelming mountain landscape with its high peaks, forests, and waterfalls—a dazzling splendor. The exceptional camerawork is already a harbinger of her later work. The rather unruly editing is too. Not a great masterpiece, then, but certainly remarkable. It is actually an example of 'Heimatkunst', a typical German genre from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From the glorification of 'die Heimat', the place where you were born, to National Socialism, is but a small step. Riefenstahl took that step with full conviction.
