2 ou 3 Choses Que Je Sais d'Elle plot

While the Vietnam War is in full swing and the threat of nuclear war between the United States and Russia mounts, the people of Paris lead increasingly emotionless lives. Lower-income families are mocked by society, and prostitution is becoming an increasingly accepted form of earning money. Nobody seems to pay attention to the problems in France and the rest of the world.

Ah, the beginning of the essay film for Godard. I didn't know this was happening back in the 60's. Fortunately, this is a bit more playful than his essay work from the 1980s and later. The term "transitional film" fits just fine.

I found the film to be a bit variable in quality, partly because I don't do much with Godard's usual social criticism, which despite many philosophical references and difficult words still feels simplistic. He is very good at portraying a confused society through image and sound, but unfortunately he can just as well hold on to a boring shot for a long time and then add an annoying voice-over that repeats a political pamphlet behind it.

The use of a prostitute in the "leading role" is also typical. Has Godard ever had a woman in his work that he didn't see as a whore or at least a slut in some way? I think there has rarely been a director who was so fascinated by the opposite sex and seemed to understand so little about it. Apparently 2 or 3 things is really all he knows about them.

All comments aside, I cannot deny that when Godard hits, he immediately hits the target. I can't call that coffee scene anything less than brilliant. Maybe even the best thing he's ever done. The double introduction of the main character is also something that only Godard could come up with. It's strange that he can also make a much simpler scene effective. For example, there is a long shot of a young woman in a cafeteria speaking to a man sitting off-screen as they talk about her perceived shame about sex. The actress plays it very well and the dialogue is sharp and full of character, which makes it a pity that this is a path that Godard rarely took.

So yes, it is a good and even special film, but also a frustrating one. I think it's part of watching a Godard.

Another typical Godard of the late sixties era. Lots of Vietnam chatter, a housewife who turns to prostitution, a child who is dumped at a kind of daycare center, starts bawling and has to be calmed down with a story from Picky Pouc. etc etc. Sometimes quite funny actually, but whether it all interests me; not right away. This film has something nostalgic for me; the cars from that era, there was usually a lot of smoking - the anti-smoking mafia did not exist at that time, the clothing and hairstyles of the ladies and even more of that. Although not fascinating, it is an interesting film by Godard that does not come close to the films that Godard made in the first half of the sixties, of which I still think Le Mépris is his best film.

So far this '2 ou 3 Choses Que Je Sais d'Elle' is the most recent Godard I saw. Considering the running time, a snack, but perhaps not really in terms of themes. In any case, this print leaves some mixed feelings, as is often the case with Godard. 'Le Mépris' remains the man's absolute masterpiece and I'm afraid I will never see a better film than his. This film regularly alternates between fascinating and uninteresting. However, I always appreciate that Godard has a nice way of disregarding all the so-called film rules and doing what he wants in his films. That works fine here too.
