A very good film, despite the poor picture and sound, but I've seen worse. Good film with a fun fight between Jackie Chan and the wooden puppets. 4.0.

Moderate.

Old Chan, which does follow the usual Shaw Bros. format, but feels different in its execution. A bit more of a throwback to the 80s work, so compared to the Shaw Bros. films, this was the future.

Only... in '76, Shaw Bros. films were technically much higher-end, and this type of film was still in its infancy. So, mediocre cinematography, poor acting, and the martial arts weren't particularly creative, though Chan does show some promise here.

Well, it's a nice little interlude, and if you're tired of the whole Shaw Bros thing, this is a decent alternative. However, the style of this film is clearly still in its infancy, and if you haven't seen much martial arts yet, you might want to check out some Hong Kong work from the 80s and 90s first.

2.5*

Revisited on Blu-ray from 88Films. Formerly known on VHS as Shaolin Chamber of Death.

This was Jackie Chan's second film for Lo Wei Productions and his first directed by Chen Chi-Hwa. Chan was loaned to this promising director, who gave him more room to experiment. They clicked well, and Jackie gained a wealth of experience, eventually taking over the director's chair himself (Fearless Hyena).

As a young boy, Little Mute (Jackie Chan) witnesses his father being murdered by a masked man with a special fighting technique. He vows to find the killer and becomes an apprentice at the Shaolin Temple. There, he befriends a prisoner in the dungeons who teaches him kung fu, but who later turns out to be his father's murderer.

One of my favorites from the Lo Wei era. Kam Kong makes a tremendously powerful bad guy, and the story has enough twists to keep it interesting. There are also plenty of great training scenes accompanied by catchy music. The fight choreography is excellent, and you can see all the talent he showcases in his later films.

Hwang Jang-lee has a small role as a bad guy in a dark blue robe in the restaurant. He worked for Seasonal Films, and they later starred together in Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master. Yuen Biao also appears as a bad guy here, but he also makes several good appearances later in the film. The Wooden Men were the inspiration for the Tekken character Mokujin for PlayStation.
