"All it took was a whisper"
Davis Merrell is a successful director, who has been working on film projects outside America for a few years. He returns when Senator McCarthy is conducting a witch hunt against communists in Hollywood, among other places. They are looking for traitors to capitalism, who themselves worship communism. When questioned by a negotiator, he doesn't tell him anything. As a result, he is blacklisted, so that he cannot work. He now faces the choice: not to declare work or members of a communist organization.

A good film about a Hollywood director who is pressured to testify against his friends. A compelling piece of history about a dark chapter in Hollywood and its personal consequences for those involved. A strong cast (including a small role for Martin Scorsese), and the hearing delivers a powerful conclusion.

Mediocre.
A bit of a dullard, this film. Robert De Niro, like his co-stars, does a solid job in this solid film. Everything exudes solidity, but that, even here, is often synonymous with a somewhat duller film. A bit stiff at times, though the running time is still a fair distance from the two-hour mark (thankfully!). The film tells a dark chapter in Hollywood history, but it's quite caricatural. The final chord, for the committee, seems to momentarily forget all about civil rights and such. Just like children fighting.

An interesting and clearly presented story (although this isn't a true story, which is a shame), and it gives a good impression of life under McCarthyism. However, I also found the film rather flat and unremarkable. Even De Niro doesn't quite fit in, though he's generally still convincing. 3.0*
