Parody of the aircraft-disaster films but also of other American ingredients in the film, such as romance, macho stuff etc... with several good gags (the translations of the messages in the plane and airport as well as the puns for example) but unfortunately too many impossible throw and throw insertions.
In any case, way too high on the IMDB ladder.

“Airplane!” tells the story of the romance between Ted Striker [Robert Hays], a former pilot with a traumatic war history and a 'drinking problem', and Elaine Dickinson [Julie Hagerty], a flight attendant who has just ended her relationship with Ted. In an attempt to win her back, he buys a ticket for the flight on which Elaine has to work. When food poisoning affects not only some of the passengers, but also the pilots of the plane, Ted turns out to be the only one who should be able to land the plane safely. While a doctor [Leslie Nielsen] tries to help the passengers, Striker must prevent disaster with the help of flight controller Steve McCroskey [Lloyd Bridges] and Striker's former commander Rex Kramer [Robert Stack].
The joke density is extremely high and some of the jokes may escape you (a reference to “Fantasy Island” and “Let 'em Crash”) and if the names Ethel Merman and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar mean little to you, you will appreciate those jokes less. than the public in 1980. Still, “Airplane!” surprisingly timeless because it focuses on films that are still part of our collective memory. The parody of the beach love scene from “From Here To Eternity” was apparently pure coincidence, but the extended parody of “Saturday Night Fever” is one of the best moments from the film. There are also countless corny puns, such as “It's an entirely different kind of flying altogether” and “That's impossible! On Instruments?” as well as totally absurd visual jokes, including during Lorna Peterson's rendition of “River of Jordan” and the crazy warning signs on the plane. “Airplane!” is in The American Film Institute's top 10 funniest movies of all time and that alone makes this a must-see movie. The funniest spoof of all time? Just might!

If a comedy film tickles you from start to finish with a barrage of humor and produces a big grin and repeated bursts of laughter in response, then the comedy is a success. Airplane is a fantastic comedy.
The trio behind the film, namely David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, is responsible for much more beautiful comedy. One thinks of Top Secret! (1984) and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988).
Just like this Airplane! the above films have a parodic slant and the applied form of humor is the same. A very recognizable and typical form of humor. That of the exaggeration, the absurdity, the dry literalness and slapstick. Delicious.
It is conceivable that the barrage of jokes that is spat out leads to joke fatigue. After all, it is much of the same sheet a suit. Little variation in the type of joke and that too incessantly and at a killer pace. This can cause boredom or concentration problems. That is not the case with me. I can enjoy it for hours.
Nice characters created by great actors. A nice list by the way. Lloyd Bridges, Julie Hagerty, Leslie Nielsen, just to name a few. Actors, who approach every frenzied situation with serious facial expressions and maintain a serious tone with every nonsensical dialogue. Handsome and very funny. Even the lamer jokes are good that way. Comedy of quality goes hand in hand here with comedy without level. And that is hilarious.
