It is about the friendship between two people who contrast in age, skin color and social background, but have one thing in common: a passion for literature. Sean Connery plays the wise eccentric, Rob Brown the young talent who wants to transcend his environment. Anna Paquin has too small a role. F. Murray Abraham again plays a Salieri type: someone who just doesn't have the great talent and is jealous of those who do. The vision of talent and genius should be taken with a grain of salt. After reading a few sentences, everyone agrees that a certain text is genius. Forrester advises Jamal not to think while writing, a kind of écriture automatique. This is a romanticized Hollywood image, as if it either comes naturally or doesn't come at all. In short, it is nice relaxation with good acting, but not to be taken too seriously.

A sweet cookie.

Van Sant probably had a better feel for the arthouse genre, despite the fact that I've only seen 1 example of it. This "sweeter" form of his cinema seems to be mainly made for sentiment and smiles, even though what is shown here is not very funny.

Again a role that fits Connery perfectly, by the way, the best man knows how to use him well. The young Brown also does a reasonable job, but acts just a bit too emotionless and static. Supporting roles of Abraham and Paquin may also be mentioned.

Van Sant treats you to a long and often predictable film that safely colors within the lines and seems to be made mainly for feel-good. In that case, the film does not aim for too many results, which is why it probably did not become Van Sant's most popular film.

Visually it is fairly easy and simple, fortunately not ugly. The camera work is not as good as what Van Sant is capable of, but some scenes do look nice. I think the best directed scenes are the ones in the football stadium and the one where Connery gets stuck in the crowd.

Despite the fact that the film sometimes does something different, as a whole it remains a pretty predictable film with a slightly too sweet finale. Fortunately, the course of the story is still entertaining and the 136 minutes never really feel too long. Moreover, it is a well-intentioned story with a clear message. I don't have much that I can really praise, but also not much that I can criticize. That's why I just give it a normal pass.

I went to see Finding Forrester to pay some kind of tribute to Sean Connery who recently passed away. Usually when such a well-known director or actor has died, I try to do so out of respect for the beauty they have given us throughout their lives.

I went into Finding Forrester completely blank. Soon I thought it must be about racism or become a kind of Rear Window. Completely next door. It was mainly about friendship. It probably helps if you're interested in reading, but this film doesn't feel really dusty. It's a pretty quiet film with interesting content. Nice to have seen. Predictable finale, yes, but that doesn't detract from the appreciation for me.
