In England's worst-running hotel, Ritchie Twat (Rik Mayall) and Eddie, or rather Edward Elizabeth Ninglebubba (Adrian Edmondson), take care of the (ab)normal day-to-day business. Ritchie is the manager who does nothing and Eddie is the one who has no function but does everything. There is also a cook and a missing (presumably dead) sidekick. Sometimes guests come, such as a typical English family, a diva who has had her day and a newlywed couple, but the men usually have to deal with each other. This creates many absurd and idiotic situations, which the guests cannot escape.

In the 90's I was a huge fan of the TV series Bottom. Often laughed so hard at that series that my chest just hurt. Guest House Paradiso fits in the vein of Bottom, but unfortunately does not reach the level of that series. Unfortunately, many of the jokes are far from original and what is fun in 30 minutes quickly becomes boring in a one and a half hour film. Not a topper from Messrs Mayall and Edmondson.

As we always say at the Guest House Paradiso: Have fun, don't go in the water if you know what's good for you and try not to get shit on the sheets.
After Bottom, Rik Myall and Adrian Edmondson return in their roles of Eddie and Richie, who they previously played in Bottom. Guest House Paradiso is located in the same street. So both characters are again very rude, rude, violent they beat each other in the brains again and very rude and know themselves time and again in the most idiotic and often hilarious situations like a pencil Richie's ass is blown and for instance all that 'pheeb' thing in the kitchen, 'forget the pheeb' to work. The story is very weak, but the gentlemen manage to make a nice film with their humor, which actually just takes too long. Still, the film continues to entertain.

Bottom is my favorite British sitcom. At least Adrian Edmondson should have known that this film is so disappointing. In 'The Making Of', which is an extra on this DVD from the Big Bottom Box, he makes it clear that the characters Richie Rich and Eddie Hitler only worked as long as they were within their own universe. Most episodes took place in their apartment or in places where no one else was in sight, such as in their successful theater shows or the famous episode 'Hole', which was completely set in a Ferris wheel.
In "Guesthouse Paradiso" they surround themselves with serious actors like Bill Nighy and Vincent Cassell and the much too attractive Hélène Mahieu. No one on the show wanted anything to do with Eddie and Richie [other than Spudgun and Hedgehog, Eddie's dubious "friends"] and frankly, it's incomprehensible that these guys don't leave Guest House Paradiso screaming right after they arrive.
The film is also underexposed and therefore also looks amateurish. In the series and in the theatrical shows, the simplicity of the sets and the deliberate amateurism of some of the effects was part of the charm [Mayall and Edmondson's ad-libs are highlights of the shows], but you can't afford amateurism in this movie . If you want to get to know the genius work of Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, you DEFINITELY shouldn't start at Guest House Paradiso!
