Knielen op een Bed Violen plot
Childhood sweethearts Hans and Margje Sievez lead a happy family life at their nursery. One day Hans encounters the preacher Jozef Mieras who tells him about God and stirs up the memories of his strict religious upbringing. When Hans subsequently has a deeply religious experience, he is convinced that he has been in direct contact with God. In the ensuing search for meaning and eternal life, he loses sight of reality and contact with his environment. He becomes more and more captivated by the faith. While Hans seems to be slipping further and further into the power of the cult, Margje can do little more than watch as the love of her life slowly but surely disappears.

Heavy material that was not always presented convincingly enough.
The acting performances are variable, unfortunately also that of Atsma.
And yet... and yet I thought that Atsma really became the character.
For me, the strength of the film lies mainly in the calm structure,
and a convincing ending. Therefore a sufficient score. *3.0

Impressive, sober film from Dutch soil. I'm not familiar with the book, but I'm curious. The screenplay is heavy and creates a gloomy atmosphere and the music helps with this. The sermons reminded me of my childhood when we attended church every week. It did not evoke any nostalgic feelings in me, because I have often seen that (extreme) faith destroys more than you would like. The behavior of the blackcoats came eerily close to the truth. If it weren't for the fact that they usually come to your door when you have just lost someone you love (they scan newspapers for obituaries......). I think the actors play well. Maybe there could have been a little more out of it, but again a very good film!!

Still a good book adaptation. While I still have to read the book and it is here next to me.
A beautiful sketch about how a family is shaped by the church and the rules of God. Something that was daily life in a village at the time. But flower grower Hans secretly has doubts about it. He runs a flower farm in his garden and tries to keep the relationship with his love Margje and his son stable. Sometimes he is approached by a preacher Jozef who whispers all kinds of messages in his ear. How that all goes...
...we also see the jumps in time and the fact that life does change. From the strictly reformed 40s and 50s to the 60s... the moment when the new generation celebrates freedom, and this is actually what Hans was looking for all along.
The film mainly works towards a remorse from the past. Interesting!
The acting and especially the decoration come out very well here. The atmosphere of the time has been skilfully recreated here. Fortunately, it doesn't get theatrical or over the top anywhere. This makes it one of the better book adaptations from the Netherlands.
