Beautiful film about family life, entirely in the tradition of Ozu. The film is told without sentiment (this is sometimes different with Koreeda) and is beautifully photographed. I found the musical support, which sometimes focuses on emotion, to be a bit mixed. If such a film is received more widely, it will receive a high score, but somehow that didn't really happen today.

I have also discovered Koreeda and, after 'Like father, like sun' and 'Nobody knows', I was very curious about his debut film. Later these follow 'After life' and 'Our little sister'. But first it was this Maboroshi no Hikari's turn.

It is a tragic film about a young happy woman who loses her partner after a suicide. The strong thing about the film is the woman's constant naggingabout the motive. Why on earth? The viewer also continues to struggle with this question. She feels guilty, blames herself and lets her go. Even when she meets a new partner, she finds it difficult to let go of the past. For a moment you fear that after the disappearance of her grandmother (when she was still young) she would also lose her son (one who falls into the water, it happened quickly). Fortunately this didn't happen and it might have been just that little bit too much.

It is a film with many silences, a film with a very slow build-up and long static camera points. Not many emotions either, but that may be due to Japanese culture. Suicidewithin Japanese society is an insidious poison, often carried by the demanding performance culture that prevails. Maybe he committed suicide due to early (stressful) fatherhood, who wants to tell?

The ending made the film stronger and symbolic. The funeral procession, the fire beacon, the explanation and the appropriate music rounded it off nicely.

Nice movie. Koreeda is excellent at atmospheric and especially small moments. Beautifully shot, wonderful rhythm and fine images of Japan. The only thing is that as a viewer you are kept at a distance for a very long time. Literally often with the camera at a great distance, but the film is extremely cold. Only in the last 10 minutes is feeling allowed. That does make it difficult to assess this. The fact is that I wasn't really drawn in, so a higher score is too high, but the film was quite nice and special, so what I'm giving now is, in my opinion, too low. Nevertheless, set at 3.5*.
