Finally got the chance to see this film; it had been on my wish list for a long time. I agree with the writers above that this is a fine film, but it doesn't reach the level of other Ford masterpieces like Searchers, Liberty Valance, or Grapes of Wrath.

Get me right, this is an excellent film, but after watching it, I did have a few sore points, for example, the officers' wives, who in my opinion were too prominent, bringing out a kind of humor that didn't fit the film at all. Bouchey's role doesn't fit the film either; broadly speaking, in my view, he gives an imitation of Ward Bond in Searchers.

Yet the film also has some very strong moments; Strode's role, his short monologue before the court, can, as far as I am concerned, be classified as a classic cinematic moment. The once again stunning landscapes, the hallmark of Ford, although in one scene—as already mentioned above—a painted set piece is visible, the actual outdoor shots are sublime, although I cannot escape the impression that the shots taken by the river were filmed in the same location as those in Searchers. I am not looking for similarities, but this is something that struck me.

The film's strongest aspect is its subject matter; once again, racism and prejudice are the themes of a Ford Western, daring for the time in which the film was released and more relevant today as the struggle for racial equality intensified in the 1960s. The fact that Ford dares to address issues such as slavery and that idiotic Civil War also testifies to courage in my eyes.

Concluding with the powerful music, the song Captain Buffalo is one of the classic Western songs.

Even though the film doesn't score as highly with me as other Ford films, I will definitely watch it again.

An excellent film in which a Black sergeant stands trial before a court-martial for murder and rape. An entertaining setup in which various testimonies are shown as flashbacks, allowing the story to slowly take shape. The plot seems predictable at first, but there are still a few surprises towards the end. Of the cast, Woody Strode makes the biggest impression in the title role.

A still impressive combination of courtroom drama, whodunit, and western, with the only real downsides being the obvious studio sets of the station and the fort, plus the somewhat melodramatic ending with the prosecutor's (Carleton Young) pompous closing argument and the dramatic outburst of the eventual culprit. Otherwise suspenseful and well-acted; Ford's typical humor is present (the "water" the judge keeps needing) but fortunately also somewhat less farcical than usual, Carleton Young is delightfully unpleasant but not overdone until he gets to his closing argument, Jeffrey Hunter is quite loud at the beginning of the trial but fortunately more nuanced later in the film, and Woody Strode is his usual impressive self. That he is innocent is actually something you can know right from the start of the film because everything speaks against him except his nobility and his skin color, but the film remains suspenseful until the very end, and fortunately, the title character is not completely forgotten during the very last (romantic) scene.
I also followed Brix's tip and ordered a foreign version of the film, this time not as an Italian DVD (I dannati e gli eroi) but as a Spanish one (El sargento negro), with the same highly realistic cover but fortunately also an excellent transfer and soundtrack. What makes this DVD quite unique is that I cannot for the life of me find the name of a manufacturer or producer on the cover or the disc; when I exit the DVD by pressing the stop button on my remote, a gray screen with the text "DVD-R" appears, so that suggests home production…
