Banned in Britain for 25 years, this film can best be described as a cross between a European arthouse film and an 'adult' film. The film begins with two horses mating. The beast from the title is a kind of human-wolf. The story revolves around a family in a cottage in the countryside. The former owner of the house had made love 200 years ago in the nearby forest with a monster that hid in the woods and fed on lambs. Through flashbacks, dream sequences and the overactive imagination of a young woman, a story is told that will amaze everyone.

This film was once part of "Contes Immoraux", a film that consists of four erotic stories, but was originally a five-part series. It was removed by the director - in hindsight a good thing - because the critics found it too subversive. Later Borowczyk knitted a separate and longer version around it. The director did not have to do the latter for me because I found the first hour of this soft porn piece extremely boring. Moreover, the acting was very mediocre, with the exception of the 'fucking horses'. I thought the scene of the two horses mating was the most beautiful in the entire film.

To be fair, the opening scene is sultry and incredibly well edited. You would think that a director who knows how to make a bunch of fucking horses interesting must know how to make a nice film. But no: the next hour is extremely boring. Borowczyk tries to hold attention with an overkill of close-ups of genitals, but to no avail. The fun only returns - with the exception of the chewing scene - when the beast from the title enters the scene. But: although this is very entertaining, it does not have the class of a huge horse's penis. Unfortunately, the high expectations I had for this fine example of monster porn were not met. The curious mind can find the piece on the Internet with the greatest of ease - and I recommend that to everyone, rather than watching the original.

La bête is part of the anthology erotic film Contes Immoraux (Film, 1973). The short films of those films are a lot more fun. The Beast is about the only thing that made it an erotic horror. Ideal for the Horror Challenge. But it never gets scary. Amusing and hilarious all the more. The screeching and hopping of the wench is soon drowned out by the panting of the werewolf species. The animal rages to such an extent that it even dies. There are worse ways to go around the corner... The cum squirts around and then that melodious soundtrack. How did they come up with it, great!
