This mediocre British war film from Boris Segal is an action story focusing on the precision bombing raids the British carried out on German rocket installations in France and Germany.

True WWII buffs may quibble with this picture because it is not quite perfect in detail, but they will still feel that they must own this film, as it simply deserves its - albeit small - place in the long line of war pictures. Director Boris Sagal later went into television until his tragic death in a helicopter crash in '81. David McCallum (Illya Kuryakin in The Man From Uncle, The Invisible Man) has a melancholy role as a squadron leader who leads his squadron of De Havilland Mosquito bombers at low altitude to attack German targets. Also very good roles from Charles Gray as Commander Hufford, Vladek Sheybal as Lieutenant Schack, Robert Urquhart as Major Kemble, and last but not least the role of Suzanne Neve, the wife of the deceased pilot friend of Quint Monroe (McCallum). There is also the beautiful photography of Paul Beeson (Raiders of the Lost Ark).

Indeed not one of the best war films, but on a rainy afternoon, with slippers on and a pint of beer in hand, it is quite doable...

I've seen bongo films better than that Mosquito rubbish!

Some pretty nice and impressive footage of the V1 in action, of the flying with the Mosquito, and the super nice car - a Godsal V8 Corsica, no less. But the story is rather disappointing, and it remains unclear why the makers did not simply choose one of the many true stories about the 619 Squadron. And apparently David McCallum thought so too, because the quote I quote above is from him.

It's not bad per se, it's just that it could have been so much better without much effort, and the question of why remains unanswered.

Fairly captivating war film with unfortunately a particularly mediocre leading role, because David McCallum has to play a stoic iron-eater here, but his immobile face shows very little emotion. Also the rather predictable plot twist at the end (the stepbrother dies a heroic death and sacrifices himself to practically clear the way for Quint and Beth) did not do the film any good. In the end, this film mainly kept my interest because it, as it were, builds on the invention of the scientist played by Michael Redgrave in The dam busters (1955), but in that film we also saw its application by a group of precision bombers. All in all, Mosquito squadron is a smooth-watching but also rather mediocre and also somewhat unnecessary war film.
