Good film about a boy in Amsterdam whose life is not going well. The film is set in Amsterdam in the mid-thirties and manages to create a nostalgic image. Clearly a product of its time (if only because of the music). The young Danny de Munk certainly does a good job in the title role.

Last seen myself as a child, of course it made more of an impression on me then. This time saw the longer version.

This is not a technical masterpiece, but the story of the Amsterdam folk boy with the difficult childhood can still be touching. The narrow alleys in the Czaar Peterbuurt serve excellently as a working-class harbor area in 1930s Amsterdam. Child abuse was a real problem. Physical and verbal abuse in the family and at school were all too often considered normal.

Ciske is a sympathetic character who clings to the bright spots in his existence. He goes through hell, purgatory and paradise: home, reformatory and his new family. The matricide is a classic theme. Orestes killed Clytemnestra.

Danny De Munk had the right accent, and could sing and act well for a thirteen-year-old. Cap and suspenders fit the period. Willeke van Ammelrooy plays a woman who has too many problems herself to be a good educator. Herman van Veen as a teacher and guardian is nice, with that recognizable, yawning voice. He wrote the famous song himself, a kind of tearjerker in which the singer is allowed to open his throat in old-fashioned style.

This is one of those Dutch classics that I saw again after a long time. The DVD-does was old and so was the movie, literally. The image quality was not great, but the sound was also disappointing. No subtitles available and the chatter of little Ciske was sometimes really unintelligible. What dialect is that by the way? Was this flat Amsterdam??? Fortunately, the rest went well. Nice to see the long series version.

A nice story in itself in which a little boy grows up in a loveless nest and after being bullied and tormented, it was also difficult to settle at school. The fact that he has not fallen on his mouth, rather puts him at a disadvantage. Fortunately, there were actually enough figures who stood up for him, his father in the first place, but also his "stepmother" and the teacher.

Still, there are quite a few sad scenes in it. There is less poverty here, although the setting of 1934 did take place during the Jordan Revolt, in which many workers protested wildly against the mismanagement.
