If you want to see an astronaut playing the bagpipes on Mars, watch Robinson Crusoe on Mars. It actually happens in this movie! An astronaut is stranded on this planet and searches for human contact. He just has to survive together with a monkey. That monkey helps him by not dying from a lack of water, because just in time he finds a waterhole where bifi sausages also grow, yum yum yum.

Well, this space traveler film is not really great, but it is also a bit slow. However, Byron Haskin (director of War of the Worlds) still makes a lot of it. It still looks quite nice. Laser spaceships that look suspiciously like those from WotW pass by and Haskin has gone to Death Valley for outdoor sets. Beautiful, an astronaut who clambers alone over endless rocks. With some red sky projected behind it, it looked like Lawrence of Arabia, but on Mars.

The story is treated quite seriously, an astronaut crashes his spaceship on Mars, all his colleagues have died and he has to survive together with a monkey in the hostile environment of Mars.

A nice story about survival, an SF story but still approached quite seriously, until the flying saucers arrive and it all becomes a bit more fantasy, unfortunately contact is never made with that unknown enemy and not much is done with that plot, the slave who manages to escape befriends the astronaut and together they try to outsmart their enemy.

I immediately recognized Death Valley as one of the recording locations.

Precursor to The Martian and also SF version of Robinson Crusoe. Here too the native is called Friday.

This film did not disappoint me. If you ignore the cheap special effects, this is a fairly entertaining adventure. The silliness is numerous of course, but that is also the case with Star Wars. What a shame that more is not done with those UFOs (they really did not look good)...
