The Great McGinty plot

"It's Two-Fisted FUN! A fightin' fool gives you laughter of a lifetime..!"

Dan McGinty is a simple bum who applies for a job with the local mob boss. Through help with vote fraud, he earns a position in the municipality and later even as mayor of the corrupt city government. In the meantime, he marries Catherine, mainly so that she can give him the appearance of a commoner. Catherine, however, really tries to get her husband to do something good for the community and that is not appreciated by everyone.

A very nice film, but it clearly doesn't measure up to the two other Sturges films I've seen so far. A nice opening and a few fun scenes like the escape scene with the guard and a few of the things I've already seen in the later Sturges films (like the slapstick moments). But it's all still a bit early. Christmas in July, made in the same year, was already much sharper and funnier. Unfortunately, Angelus and especially Donlevvy aren't such good actors for these roles either. They lack some personality.

So, a nice debut that already hints at what is to come later.

I agree with starbright boy. Quite fun in parts, but it is nowhere near the level of Hill to the Conquering Hero. Christmas in July was also a bit more fun.

Occasionally, that simplistic American humor is something that can really annoy me; with this film, I felt that to a much greater extent than usual, to such an extent that it even ruined the film for me. Actually, the humor isn't really funny anywhere and is often very lame; I quickly got tired of the constant "OOOOh yeah" followed by yet another fight.

Fortunately, at 81 minutes, the film is not too long.
