Bwah.

Actually avoided Chan's works for years. Personally, I think that much more impressive films are made in HK, also (and certainly) in terms of action. Only unsurpassed in the stunt work in Chan, if there are now Thai action films that go the extra mile.

Still, I've been watching some Chan movies lately. You can't keep ignoring the best man and that's how a few big director names from HK pass by.

The first part of the movie was pretty dull. Chan gets a lot of beating, the acting of everyone except Chan is really not to be seen. Not that Chan acts that well himself, but he somehow has enough charisma to survive in front of the camera.

It is only from the scene in the gang's lair that the film revives, then of course the very spectacular final scene with the hovercraft. Still really surprised a few times to see what all disappeared under that thing (including people). It is a pity that in such scenes the camera work is a bit of a let down.

The second part is entertaining, but the first part is very weak and apart from the action scenes, the film really has nothing to offer. Suspect Chan is best known for making it to America, but I'd rather watch a Yen or Li. It's fun entertainment (usually just a little too long), that's all.

Still a very nice spectacle film, this Rumble in the Bronx.

In terms of content, it is not a ball and if you look at the acting, it is sometimes so bad to cry, but fortunately enough. Because it sometimes looks very clumsy, the film often also has a very comical charge about it. In addition, there is a lot of spectacular action, which is mixed with humor in an excellent way. This makes the entertainment value unprecedented.

The ending scene, which uses a Hoovercraft, is great. But in between Chan also shows you how to crawl through a shopping cart. In addition, he fights happily in a cafe. All moments that make it worth it. So nice films, where the spectacle and humor easily get rid of the weak script and acting.

Rumble in the Bronx, Chan's breakthrough in America. With this, the general public got to know this great guy. The film itself is rather poor in story, but Jackie Chan himself is in top form, delivering fast-paced action, solid stunts and great fight scenes. In the mid 80's Chan started with the well-known formula of action and humor with his well-known fight scenes in which he makes use of many objects he encounters. And also at the end of the 90s this formula is running at top level with a Chan that is very strong. Gradually, for financial reasons, he will run a series of bland American blockbusters in order to finance his other projects.

The rest of the cast is a bit less and suffers from a large typecasting that goes into the caricatural. Although those heavy boys in the suit are impressive and the Chinese ladies still play quite well. Anita Mui previously played with Chan in Drunken Master 2. For Françoise Yip it is one of her first major roles and she will later become more famous with films such as Blade Trinity, Romeo must die and Black Mask. Bill Tung is also no stranger, he was already seen in Police Story.
