The Amityville Curse plot

"It began with a murder and a hanging. Now, the innocent must pay for the sins of the guilty..."

In the small village of Amityville, an elderly priest is brutally slaughtered in his confessional by an unknown man. The belongings from his church are stored in the house where he lived and the house is put up for sale. Years later, the house is bought by a group of friends and together they leave for Amityville to fix up the house. But then Debbie starts having the most violent nightmares about the house. The house seems to be alive and tries to warn her. No one seems to believe her, but then the ghosts in the house turn against them and they have to fight for their lives.

Very bad part of the Amityville series. The characters, the strongest in this series so far, don't go anywhere and always push the boundaries of irritation, especially that sensitive and squeaky female. What a pathetic display. Furthermore, it is quite nice that a dark look has indeed been chosen, but this does not really come out well anywhere. Downer.

1.5*

Tastes do indeed differ, because I think this is the weakest film in the series so far, while the previous Amityvilles weren't exactly good either.

Dawna Wightman plays the very overly hysterical Debbie who has visions of the previous events in the house. This can be described as overacting, but I just found her whole experience highly irritating.

Unfortunately, this time another house is used (again) instead of the iconic house with "the eyes" (those two upper windows).

From the moment of Mrs. Moriarty's death it has been clear that this time we are dealing with a flesh-and-blood perpetrator, even if he was (presumably) possessed. As a result, the pieces of the puzzle fall together quite quickly and I figured out who the perpetrator had to be quite well before the "reveal".

Also in this film we get some banging doors and sudden gusts of wind, but this is also presented in a quite boring way.

Partly because of this, there is no tension throughout the film and there is certainly no creepiness whatsoever.

Why this particular Amityville has been given a Dutch release is a mystery to me, as I think part 3 and Amityville: The Evil Escapes, published in the same year, are both a lot better than this boring monstrosity.

I can't recommend this one...

The fifth part in the Amityville series featuring a young Kim Coates, who usually appears as a supporting role in relatively large film projects. From the "original" series, The Amityville Curse has the lowest grade average, but the final result is worth waiting for. The first half hour in particular has enough charming and detailed haunted house images not to bore you. The atmosphere is absolutely great and director Tom Berry at least takes the trouble to provide the film with ominous lighting and music, but once the story progresses into the second half, things get bogged down in silliness. The final final phase produces unintentional hilarity, the acting (with the exception of David Stein) is severely substandard and in terms of horror the film never really wants to be exciting. It is better than the miserable previous part because of the richer detailed images, but in the end this series mainly consists of pulp.
