The Raven plot

"The uncanny master of make-up in a new amazing shocker"

A wealthy judge persuades the retired, brilliant, but eccentric neurological surgeon Vollin to help his daughter, who has been paralyzed by a car accident. Vollin fully recovers her but imagines her as his "Lenore". He plans to kidnap her and kill her betrothed and father in his 'Edgar Allen Poe' inspired dungeon. For this, he enlists the help of Karloff whom he has turned into a monster to serve him.

A bit of a messy hodgepodge in the sense that for certain scenes inspiration was taken from other stories by Edgar Allen Poe (Black Cat, Pit & Pendulum). But the film also reminded me of creating a monster (Frankenstein) and the appearance of Lugosi is very Draculian.

Luckily the playing time was short because I didn't find it very interesting, is my conclusion.

Well, a bit of a trifle of a film that piggybacks on the Poe hype of that time, and on the names of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. The former carries the film, lubriciously and all, in which it is a typical mad scientist story. It may be called 'The Raven', but it has very little to do with that story, and although there are all kinds of references to Poe (The Pit and the Pendulum features prominently, and Lenore is also dragged in by the hair - Lugosi's character is a Poe fanatic) it actually seems more like Frankenstein or The Invisible Man. Fortunately it only lasts an hour, and even then it remains rather meager.

Well, the film remains somewhat upright because of the two actors Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. It doesn't really get exciting and apart from the torture chamber and Karloff's mutilated face, this film has too few horror elements. Fortunately, it doesn't last too long, which makes the film somewhat easy to watch. 5/10
