The weirdo in me was remarkably happy that DeCoteau also included a number of pieces in this series. And in this case absolutely not the least! This third part delves deeper into the story behind Toulon during the times of Nazi Germany and once again adds great pop to the arsenal. There is little more to say than what was in force in the previous two parts. Guy Rolfe reverses his role and takes on the role of a Toulon who would do anything for his puppets. This also heralded the end of his career. Only three Puppet Master films followed, then it was over.

I'm a little afraid of Curse of the Puppet Master (1998) , Retro Puppet Master (1999) and Puppet Master: Axis of Evil (2010) ... but as DeCoteau and now (secretly, a bit..) Puppet Master fan it has to happen at some point

Back to square one.

I thought part 2 was a lot better than the first part, especially because the approach was a lot simpler. Just a bunch of puppets killing a bunch of cattle for slaughter in a big, gothic hotel. It doesn't have to be much more, because the makers don't have those qualities anyway.

This is also evident here. A prequel/origin story. With more attention to the characters and the story, which doesn't come out at all. Probably also because the story takes place in Germany, but as a viewer you never get that feeling. Bad German/English accents, ugly sets and some cheap stock footage in between.

But the worst thing is that there is hardly any horror in it. A few short scenes, that's all. Furthermore, a new doll, quite nice but nothing to really be happy about. No, the attempt to turn this into a slightly more serious film is very disappointing, the simpler the better this series.

1.5*

Director David DeCoteau brings the origin story back to World War II and puts a little more weight into the content, but those are not exactly the elements that a concept like Puppet Master benefits from. Of course, this part is considered by a large number of enthusiasts to be the best that the series has to offer, but I found it mainly drawn out and sometimes even boring. The puppets are nevertheless fun and have an excellent addition with Six Shooter, which regularly livens up the film. Ultimately, I can understand the choice to make a sincere attempt to strengthen the content, but the whole thing is still ruined by a tired interpretation and horror scenes that do not radiate enough pleasure. In that regard, the previous installment seemed to have a better recipe for an entertaining dose of horror fun, despite its obvious shortcomings.
