This one was on TV and picked up once. I didn't think it was a bad film and despite its age, the film still managed to captivate. The cast did just fine.

Visually, it wasn't a boring film either.

I thought it was worth watching once in a while, not really a movie to watch often, but I haven't regretted it either.

What is immediately noticeable is the pace at which the film starts. Films of today sometimes spend an extra half hour explaining (irrelevant) things, while this film goes straight to the essence in about 5 minutes. Still, the film lasts a long time and can be split into 2 parts. Part 1 gets 3* because of a little too little. However, part 2 makes up for a lot, so I still get to 3.5 *. Excellent rendition of Mr. Smith. A rendition that many actors today could learn from. Unfortunately not the topper I had hoped/expected (but perhaps many Americans - as well as other people - will not agree with that)

“The Chair recognizes... Senator Smith!”

Rock solid classic. It takes a while for the film to get going, but as soon as Stewart goes to work in Washington I was captivated by the story full of political intrigue and the struggles of the idealistic Jefferson Smith. Fantastic role by James Stewart, and his scenes with the equally strong Jean Arthur are highlights of the film.

In this politically engaged film, even the romantic subplot works, and then you have to be in good hands. The American political system is complicated, but the ingenious script (and my study) makes it easy to follow. There is no room for idealism here, but Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ends on a positive note. There is no room for cynicism in Capra's world, and that's nice too.
