For a bad B-movie, I've seen worse and, surprisingly, I still managed to enjoy this one.

Sure, the acting is occasionally cringeworthy, the story is ripped off from Jaws, and the effects aren't spectacular, but these are precisely the things that make it entertaining. It completely misses the point of filmmaking—to tell a thrilling story about mutated killer piranhas—but that's the case with most similar films.

2* for entertainment.

Just another piranha.

The 2010 version is pretty much my ultimate guilty pleasure, while I absolutely hated director Joe Dante's first film. The film in between is clearly my least favorite, but I still prefer it to the somewhat lackluster and utterly boring 1970s version. It's more entertaining.

Although it starts off rather dull. The setting of this film resembles the version from 17 years ago, but that's certainly not a compliment. A bit of splashing around in the river next to a forest, but the forest never manages to provide the kind of environment that draws the viewer in. It's only towards the third act that we reach open water, and that's where the fun really takes off.

Some rather clunky scenes here and there. Anyone hoping for piranha action will be disappointed, as the footage is fleeting and haphazard. It's shot quite intensely, though, so the attacks retain a certain charm in their own way. I also appreciated the camera occasionally diving underwater, which adds to the atmosphere.

I just don't really appreciate the atmosphere itself. The first hour is mostly tiresome, and the gore isn't impressive enough to give the film a distinctive character. The most remarkable element of this film is probably the young Mila Kunis we see, but that's about it. Mediocre, but not terrible.

An entertaining horror film with plenty of action and gore. The pace is quite fast, and the film opens with a bang when a young couple dives into the water at an abandoned army base. Here we see the very shapely Lorissa McComas. Quite a few gory scenes follow, but unfortunately, the two main characters don't really belong there. Both come across as very tame in this film. Also, watch out for Mila Kunis as a young girl who encounters the film world early on. 6/10
