This. Is. Fantastic!

Very Corman and very strange that on a site like this (where there actually is a larger audience for a film like this) there are such lukewarm reactions.

From the bad puppet animation, bad fights, really bad dialogue and the cannibalistic warrior with a pig's head, to the extreme sexploitation (boobs!), a crappy final boss, great soundtrack, ridiculous script and last but not least the crappy protagonist: bad sword and sorcery at its best.

I immediately ordered The Roger Corman's Cult Classics Sword & Sorcery Collection, which includes Deathstalker, Deathstalker II, The Warrior and the Sorceress, and the Barbarian Queen. It's going to be a treat.

Cult. Cheap Sword & Sorcery junk that shamelessly imitates its bigger brothers, this has to be one from the Corman stable After a somewhat rough start, it shows its true colors. Once you get to the prehistoric strip club, things really take off: midgets run around, we see how a half-man, half-pig devours a pig's head, there's naked wrestling in the mud, and the women are invariably harassed by all the drunken warriors. Yes, that's when the real thing begins. A sleazy, bloody mess with cardboard sets and costumes, but oh so entertaining.

The bar isn't exactly high in this genre, but Deathstalker defies it with flying colors. For a low-budget effort—which it clearly is—what comes out is admirable, but that doesn't make it good. The biggest problem is that it's all taken far too seriously. A little humor or self-deprecation, and it could have been an unbeatable cult hit.

Visually, it's pretty good, perhaps with the exception of the cardboard sets. But who cares when a Barbi Benton or Lana Clarkson is standing in front of it? Not me. I just saw someone mention it in a post here, and honestly, I hadn't noticed.
