Two shinobi clans, Koga and Iga, live in complete isolation from the rest of the world. Although there is no contact with the outside world, they have developed themselves very well. Because there is now peace, the shogun is not so happy with the shinobi. and tries to play them off against each other. Not really Ninja gangs, but Shinboi clans.

A good film, not very original, but stylishly executed. Perhaps a bit similar to Ninja Scroll. More fantasy, especially in terms of fighting styles, less swordplay. And that's a good thing. It gives you a chance to watch something different (and more original).

Tak Sakaguchi's martial arts (nice reunion, great role) are especially amazing. The guy in black with the long sleeves, for example. A typical story, with a suspiciously high emphasis on the drama element. But quite stylishly executed. There are even some impressive scenes, especially when the girl gouges out her own eyes at the end. Not too many fight scenes, but some very impressive ones. Especially Tak's scene in the forest. Something new, and well-directed.

A fine film by Ten, who spruces up a familiar concept with some new fighting styles, and thus boasts some nice character design. Quite unusual, after his work on About Love. A completely different genre, though this film is also made with more love than your average Feudal Japan action flick.

Worth it, saw some really cool things. Somewhat shoddy CG at the beginning of the film, but that doesn't last too long. 4*

I wasn't bothered by the "bad" CGI at first. I actually quite enjoyed it. The whole film looks absolutely stunning, not just the special effects, but also the locations... stunning! Very well-executed, tight fights with some nice touches that weren't bad SFX either. Quite the opposite!

The story wasn't anything special, even quite weak. That's not a problem if it results in an engaging film, but unfortunately, this film was a bit too dull and slow. The fights were great, and although there were some beautiful scenes interspersed, I caught myself yawning occasionally. The confrontation at the end is very powerful, and the eye-gouging scene was completely unexpected and even quite brilliant. However, it wasn't my favorite scene in the film; that title goes to one of the last (or maybe it was the final scene, I don't remember) with the blind Oboro in the snow, in the same location as the beginning. That might just be one of my favorite scenes ever!

A solid 3.5*. I'm quite positive about this film, and I'm even a bit surprised by the rating, but it's just the rating I had in mind after seeing it, and the film was just a bit too dull to be a true winner. It does look fantastic, though, despite the perhaps less-than-stellar editing.

A beautiful fantasy action drama. The story is quite well-conceived. The execution is also strong. The film is well-structured, and drama, suspense, and action intertwine effectively. The fights between the fighters, each with their own specialty, are well-executed and beautifully shot. The ending is emotional, but the action could have been better. Visually, the film is very beautiful with beautiful colorful settings and set design, including excellent cinematography. 3.5/4.0
