Ken Braden (James Garner) is a naval lieutenant who receives a special assignment during World War II. He is transferred to a submarine bound for an island occupied by the Japanese. His mission is to get to the island undetected and photograph secret radio codes there.

Average war adventure film from that period with the classic ingredients such as there is some romance, the unavoidable squabbles among the crew and the disagreements of the officers, the seriousness of the battle and the eventful ending.
Not a masterpiece, but actually I can't say a bad word about it.

Still quite a few decades old, but still surprisingly fresh thanks to the smooth dialogue and the tense performances of the two stars - James Garner in particular impresses, not only with his physicality and his grin, but also with his thinly veiled aversion to (and perhaps even contempt for) the regime of Edmond O'Brien. Of course not as photogenic-claustrophobic with beautifully lit corridors full of red light as we are used to from Das Boot and The hunt for Red October and other modern submarine films, but still quite exciting . Too bad the filmmakers didn't have the guts (or the vision) to maintain the radio silence of the first half of the actual mission and instead went for "exciting" music during the second half.

This war film with James Bond adventure edge just doesn't want to rise above mediocrity. It's not really going anywhere. Scenes on a submarine and other exotic locations are always fun, but nothing special is done with them. Acting remains solid; Edmond O'Brien is the most convincing yet.
