Brother plot

"Are You Japanese?"

Disowned by his Japanese buddies, Yamamoto (Takeshi Kitano) sets out in Los Angeles in search of his half-brother. It turns out that this one moves in an insignificant 'corridor' of small drug traffickers. Yamamoto takes care of this group and teaches them the tricks of the trade, as he learned them in Japan. His input is so successful that the as yet unknown criminal group grows into a veritable criminal organization that dominates the streets of Los Angeles. Full of respect for authorities and each other, they distance themselves from the typical American gangsters. But they will always be criminals.

Also revised again. I thought this was a lesser Kitano the first time, that's not much different now. Less (visual) poetry than in his better films, Hisaishi has also written stronger soundtracks; this one was sometimes rather thick, and otherwise the American actors are not too strong.

Certainly some positive notes as well. First of all, the violence is really hard, with people being shot in the head quite unexpectedly, for example, where the camera is also nice and close, and where the editing feels flashy. Also memorable is Osugi's harakiri where his intestines literally hang out. Finally, Kitano and Terajima play very strong roles as rock hard ruthless Yakuza. The older I get, the less I have with violence, but I have to admit that their characters are very cool.

Also this time the ending feels like a false note (also thanks to the mediocre American acting). The strength of Kitano's best films is that a lot is said with few words; The images speak for themselves. And I kind of miss that in this movie, especially in the end. In the end, half off: 3*.

Don't mind it. A mediocre story with actions that make you scratch your head, unfathomable. The playing is often weak and the special fx are not too good either. Even the sound effects seem to be from the 1970s. You may like this type of film, but I don't.
