Jaws: The Revenge plot

"This time it’s personal."

It's been several years since the coastal town of Amity was rocked by the murderous attacks of the bloodthirsty shark. Since these dramatic events, Ellen Brody has rebuilt her life. Her son Sean has taken over from his father and works as a deputy sheriff at the resort. During a routine service boat trip, the craft is swept up in a huge upwelling of water and disappears into the depths. Has the great white shark struck again?

Better than part 3 in many ways. It's all a bit more modern and contemporary. The faded water park gives way to an atmospheric snowy Christmas setting...correction, the sunny Bahamas!

They have done their best to keep interaction with the shark to a minimum and mainly focus on coping with PTSD, 50+ love relationships and scientific research on underwater snails. Depth can be found not only in the dialogues, but also in the budding romance between two fifty-somethings, one a traumatized, grieving woman, the other a womanizing drug pilot (none other than Michael Caine).

Also effective is the minimal tension, realized by using the most vintage rubber shark models they could find in the dusty storage room of the film studio.

They used innovative techniques for the editing, including not cutting out boring dialogue (after all, real life isn't always exciting), muddled action scenes for optimal disorientation and sepia flashbacks with archive footage of Jaws 1 because Roy had thanked Scheider for the honor of a cameo.

Gone are the clumsy 3D effects from the previous part, it was 1987, after all, 3D was old-fashioned! Instead, they called in the virtuoso Henry Millar for the visual practical effects, who doesn't know him? A dazzling Razzie award now flaunts on his nightstand. Well done Henry!

It may be clear, this final piece in the series can compete with the best of the worst.
